What it is
A sleeper train. Not a flight.
Nightjet is ÖBB's overnight rail network, connecting more than 40 European city pairs from a single booking engine. You board in the evening, sleep in a private cabin or couchette berth, and arrive at the city centre the following morning — no airport, no security queue, no wasted day in transit. The train does the work while you sleep.
Who it's for
Anyone who's done the maths.
A Nightjet sleeper costs less than a flight plus a hotel night, saves you the airport experience on both ends, and deposits you rested at a central station rather than an airport forty minutes from anywhere. It suits the traveller who values time, hates airports, and has worked out that slow is often faster when you account for everything flying actually involves.
Why you should take it
Europe is better at ground level.
Flying between European cities is a solved problem. Everyone does it. Nightjet is the alternative for people who've noticed that the journey itself can be part of the trip. The Amsterdam to Zurich route passes through the Rhine valley after dark — you won't see it, but you'll wake up having crossed the Alps. The Vienna to Rome service threads through the Brenner Pass in the small hours. These are not scenic trains. They are practical trains that happen to cross extraordinary geography while you sleep. That distinction matters.
How to book
01
Book at nightjet.com or via Rail Europe
Nightjet's own site books all routes in EUR and accepts international cards. Rail Europe is the North American-facing alternative — it prices in USD or CAD and has English-language customer support. Both give you the same inventory. Rail Europe is marginally easier for first-time bookers unfamiliar with European rail ticketing.
02
Choose your accommodation class carefully
Nightjet offers three classes on most routes. Seat reservations are the cheapest — you sleep upright, not recommended for journeys over six hours. Couchette berths are six-berth open cabins with a fold-down bed, pillow, and blanket — good value, shared with strangers but perfectly comfortable. Private sleeper cabins are two or three berths with a door that locks, breakfast included, and a washbasin — the right choice for couples or anyone who sleeps badly around strangers.
03
Board at the city centre station, not an airport
Amsterdam Centraal, Wien Hauptbahnhof, Zürich HB — Nightjet departs from main city stations, typically between 20:00 and 23:00. Arrive twenty minutes before departure. Your cabin key or berth assignment is on your ticket. There is no check-in process. Walk to your carriage, find your berth, and the train does the rest.
04
Book four to eight weeks out for the best fares
Nightjet uses dynamic pricing — fares increase as the train fills. Couchette berths on popular routes like Amsterdam–Zurich or Vienna–Rome sell out weeks in advance. The fare on this board reflects current availability. Booking eight weeks out typically gets you 20–30% below peak price. Last-minute availability exists but at significantly higher cost.
